This is the word for “west”, and as “east” is derived from a stem meaning “beginning, so “west” is derived from –ōrr– “end”.

  1. It is quite nice. I like how -ōrr- is very similar to the root that gave Latin oriens, and so, the opposite concept. But I actually like the sound of -ōrr- for “end”. And of course I guess the thing that “begins” and “ends” is the Sun’s path across the sky, right?
